If the sand becomes really dirty it’s very easy and very inexpensive to just replace the sand. In fact you will want to do this every couple of years for optimum filtration. There are two other filter types. The diatomaceous earth filter and the cartridge filter. Diatomaceous earth is made out of fossilized sea organisms that have become diatoms. They collect and trap the dirt. The cartridge filter is made of polyester cloth and it traps the dirt and debris. The rate at which the water passed through the filter depends on your pool size, pump size, and filter size. Typically this will range from 30 minutes to 8 hours. Sand filters are very effective at removing debris and dirt. In fact they are so effective they are also used in wastewater treatment. That tells you plenty about this type of filtering system.
